The background pattern looks like a good start. With a bit more roughness and texture, and some sharper edges, it might be very interesting. I'm not sure about the use of the brush shapes here--often direct mimicry doesn't work as well as we might hope. Perhaps some other shapes with some of the same properties might be useful?
